Ferdinand - connecting Newport with 19thC. France

The French designer of the Transporter Bridge, Ferdinand Arnodin, the son of a bridge inspector was born in 1845 and a contemporary of Gustav Eiffel, builder of the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Arnodin was invited by the Newport Borough Engineer, Robert Haynes, to design a bridge along the lines of his 'Arial Ferry' at Rouen in France, to overcome the problems of moving traffic and pedestrians across the busy shipping lanes of the River Usk.

It cost £98,124 and was opened by Lord Tredegar on the 12th September 1906. Newport's bridge is one of the last remaining transporter bridges still in daily operation, it is a Grade 1 Listed Structure and a prominent feature on the Newport skyline. There are only seven other similar bridges throughout the world, and the Newport Transporter Bridge is arguably the finest of its kind.

It's towers stand 645 feet apart on opposite banks of the Usk and rise 242 feet above road level. An electric powered gondola, suspended from a wheeled overhead gantry by wires, is pulled by motorised steel cable and carries motor vehicles and foot passengers across the river Usk at fifteen minute intervals.

Encouraging Access to Countryside :: News :: Crow Point Festival

Crow Point Encourages Access to Countryside

From the semi-natural ancient woodlands of Coed Wen and Plas Machen to the meadows at Llanmartin and the wet pastures and reen systems of the Levels, Newport has a wealth of habitats and wildlife. You can find out more by meetingNewport's Countryside Team at Crow Point Festival.

One thing you shouldn't miss if you come to the festival by bike is the Newport Wetlands Reserve. The Reserve was created as compensation for the loss of habitat caused by the building of the barrage in Cardiff Bay. Reedbeds, lowland wet grassland, saline lagoons, and saltmarsh have been created over 438.6 ha between Uskmouth and Goldcliff.
