Throughout Cllr Miqdad Al-Nuaimi's year as Mayor a number of fundraising events will be held throughout the city to raise money for two chosen charities; Crow Point Festival is pleased to help Growing Space and the Campaign for St Woolos Cathedral by allowing the two charities to collect money at the festival.
Growing Space offers sheltered
training and work experience leading to employment and/or reintegration
into society for adults suffering from mental health problems.
Based at Tredegar House and Coomassie
Street in Pill, training is provided in horticulture, woodwork, information
technology craft and a work-based learning programme leading to accreditation.
Growing Space also provides a mobile garden clearance service throughout
Newport for elderly and disabled council tenants. During 2005/06 169 gardens
were cleared.
The money raised during the mayoral year will go towards the purchase of
a vehicle for a new gardening service which will enable the charity to expand
its services.
Wales MEP Glenys Kinnock, founder patron of Growing Space, said: “I have
seen so many examples of how self esteem and self worth is built among people
who have been involved with the project. Growing Space concentrates upon
each individual’s ability not inability.”

The £3 million appeal to repair
one of the city’s most famous landmarks will be launched in July and has
already received the support of Prince Charles who has donated a “handsome”
amount to the appeal.
A
detailed investigation was carried out by conservators at the end of February
after a routine inspection in January found major problems with the building.
It was discovered that the oak roof trusses in the cathedral’s medieval
nave were rotting, making the roof unsafe, while many outer walls were flaking
and clay roof tiles needed
replacing.
The rainwater outlets on the outside of the building also need to be improved
and large areas of the cathedral are in desperate need of limescale treatment.
St Woolos Cathedral has been a haven of peace in the heart of Newport for
over 1500 years. The original wooden church was rebuilt in stone by the
Saxons, then added to by the Normans, enlarged by the Plantagenets in the
15th century and extended by architect Alban Caroe in
the 1960s.
It is estimated that £1.5 million will need to be raised before the cathedral
can apply for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw.
The announcement of the launch of the appeal has already caused a lot of
interest. The Very Rev’d Dr Richard Fenwick, Dean at the cathedral, said
that people have been very enthusiastic about asking what they can do to
help.
He said: “I’m very grateful to the mayor. This is a further example of the
close relationship that there is between the cathedral and the city.”

From the semi-natural ancient woodlands of Coed Wen and Plas Machen to the meadows at Llanmartin and the wet pastures and reen systems of the Levels, Newport has a wealth of habitats and wildlife. You can find out more by meetingNewport's Countryside Team at Crow Point Festival.
One thing you shouldn't miss if you come to the festival by bike is the Newport Wetlands Reserve. The Reserve was created as compensation for the loss of habitat caused by the building of the barrage in Cardiff Bay. Reedbeds, lowland wet grassland, saline lagoons, and saltmarsh have been created over 438.6 ha between Uskmouth and Goldcliff.
